EFV: what it is, how to get it and why a driver needs it
The Electronic Vehicle Passport (EVP) is a digital version of the traditional paper-based vehicle passport. It contains information about the vehicle's technical specifications, owner data, structural modifications, technical inspections, and other important details.
As a reminder, since November 1, 2020, only electronic vehicle passports are issued in Russia. While paper versions are still valid, vehicle owners can decide whether to transition to the electronic format. Here’s what you need to know about this virtual document.

What is the purpose of an EVP?
An EVP serves as the vehicle's identifier. It is required for:
- Registering the vehicle with the traffic police (GIBDD) after purchase, gift, or inheritance
- Checking the vehicle before purchase to verify specifications, mileage, and usage history
- Inclusion in sales contracts
- Obtaining car insurance
How to obtain an EVP?
The process begins with registering the vehicle. For new cars, the dealer or manufacturer issues and registers the EVP in the system. For vehicles already in use, transitioning to an EVP is possible during re-registration or at the owner's request. The process is simplified and does not require significant effort from the owner.

Is it mandatory to replace paper EVPs with electronic ones?
Replacing a paper EVP with an electronic one is optional. Vehicle owners with paper EVPs may switch to the electronic format at their discretion, but both documents cannot exist simultaneously. If the paper EVP is lost or damaged, a duplicate can be requested through [Gosuslugi](https://esia.gosuslugi.ru/login/). Since November 1, 2020, only electronic versions are issued.
How long does it take to obtain an EVP?
Issuing or amending an EVP takes at least two business days after the accredited authority registers all necessary documents. Additional checks may extend this period.
What happens if errors are found in the EVP?
Errors in technical data can arise from typos, equipment malfunctions, or operator mistakes. These inaccuracies can cause issues during vehicle sale or registration. Correction involves issuing a new EVP to replace the current one.
